Recently, some Pixel phone users have experienced a significant issue with a particular YouTube video. According to several reports, this video is causing some Pixel phones to crash immediately when playing. In addition, some users have reported having issues with their mobile network after trying to play the video. The problem with the video did not appear on smartphones with iOS.
YouTube video blocks Google Pixel smartphones running Android
The issue was reported by several users in a thread on Reddit, including those using Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6A phones. An editor at The Verge also reported that the system crashed when trying to play a video on his Pixel 6 device. However, the problem is not present in all Pixel phone users. Some users report that their Pixel devices can play video without any problems.
The video in question is a scene from the sci-fi horror film Alien. Which is available in 4K HDR and is over two years old. Although the video has been available for quite some time, it has only recently been causing problems on Pixel phones. Although users of potentially affected phones are advised not to watch it.
The cause of the issue is currently unknown and Google has not yet issued any statement on the matter. However, some users are speculating that the issue may be related to how Pixel phones handle colors. Similar to the issue that previously caused certain wallpapers to crash on some Android phones.
Pixel phones are known for their video playback capabilities. Therefore, this issue poses a significant problem for those who rely heavily on this ability of their devices. The fact that the issue affects some Pixel devices and not others suggests that the problem is not related to the video itself. But rather with how the devices process the data.
The incident underscores the importance of software testing and quality assurance to prevent similar problems. As Pixel phones become increasingly popular, Google must take measures to ensure that its devices are thoroughly tested before launch.
Android operating system crash due to wallpaper
In the first half of 2020, a couple of operating system wallpapers caused a crash that could result in a factory data reset. It was an effective-looking sunset image. The blame seems to lie with the fact that this image uses Google’s Skia color palette and not sRGB, which is natively supported in Android. The “cursed” image was pointed out by well-known mobile technology insider Ice Universe, who warned Samsung phone owners in particular. On iOS and iPhones, the problem is not apparent.
The image can be rendered harmless either by deleting it (taking a screenshot) or by editing it in any way that overwrites the problematic color profile. For those who have already set it as their wallpaper and their phone is now stuck in a constant reboot loop or bootloader, we have some advice. If your phone boots into safe mode, you may have plenty of time to set a different, safe image as your wallpaper. It can also help if your phone doesn’t boot into safe mode but you have what’s called a custom recovery on it (this isn’t very common, but if you’re using a custom ROM or rooting your phone, you probably have this environment installed on it), go into the custom recovery app and clear the wallpaper data to reset the wallpaper to its default state. If the above solutions do not help, go to the bootloader and reset the device to factory settings. However, this will cause you to lose all your data.
